Standing Stone

Sandstone

A tower of sandstone nearly four metres in height stands on a shallow hill in a field just outside Latheron in the far north of Scotland. It’s top half is coated in thick layers of fruticose grey-green lichen, a type which thrives on tall stones at coastal sites around Scotland.

Stone Circle

Sandstone

An atmospheric setting for this desolate large horseshoe stone circle, with a nearby loch and distant volcanic mountains making up its backdrop. The thirty-four stones are unusual in that they face each other rather than face the centre of the circle. The variety of trapezoid and triangular shapes make up for their diminutive size.

Chambered Cairn

Sandstone

Whilst the exterior of the Camster cairns are fairly colourless as their name suggests, the interiors of these long burial chambers are quite the opposite. A crawl along their passageway entrance brings you to the cold damp inner space of layered stone walls and large upright slabs which have a rich purple and green colouring.
