Machrie Moor 3

Arran

Stone Circle

Sandstone

This powerful megalith is the only stone standing at Machrie Moor 3. It has a compelling presence that draws you in for closer inspection. Many people visit Neolithic sites to pay homage by leaving offerings and tributes. Here, a small delicate wreath of heather and grass rests in the groove of the stone.

Arran

Stone Circle

Granite

Two ringed circles are a rarity in Scotland and here the two rings form an elegant and mysterious layout of rounded granite stones which has weathered at a slower rate than the sandstone circles nearby. The shallow dome profile suggests it was originally a cairn, although excavations have only revealed a capping of small stones at the centre.

Chambered Cairn

Sandstone

This cairn lies in a clearing high up in a plantation on Arran's east coast. With the disarrangement of stones and displacement of the capstone, the cairn resembles the skeletal remains of some fallen Pterodactyl. With the chamber now open to the skies, a concentration of orange Trentepolia lichen has developed on the damper sheltered passageway.

Stone Row

Sandstone

Rainfall plays a part in the shaping of standing stones. Deep grooves have developed running from the tops of these stones to create channels of a slime green colouring. A third stone beyond a high hedged estate road in an adjacent field, stands in line with these two and the high ridge of Beinn Tarsuinn beyond.
